Good to know

Is there an app that tells me my BAC?

Clearline is a BAC calculator for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch. Log what you drink and it estimates your blood alcohol now, how high it will go and when it's likely back near zero, from your drinks, your body and the time. It's an estimate: only a breath or blood test measures blood alcohol.

How does Clearline work out my BAC?

With the Widmark formula: the alcohol you logged, divided by your weight times a body-water ratio worked out from your sex, height, weight and age, less what your body clears each hour (about 0.015%). It adds each drink as it reaches your blood, and shows a range because bodies vary. Every number has its source in the app, under How it works.

Can I use it to decide whether to drive?

No. Clearline estimates your blood alcohol from what you log. Bodies vary, so the real number can be higher. Never use it to decide whether to drive.

Does it keep a drink journal?

Yes. Every evening becomes a night in the Journal, with its drinks, its high and a calendar of the month. Stats compares you with yourself: your usual high, days with no drinks, your biggest night and how this month compares with the last.

Is my drink data private?

Yes. Your drinks, nights, weight and every estimate stay on your devices; Clearline has no account and no servers. The one banner ad never sees any of it, and it is only personalized if you allow tracking. Read the privacy policy.

How much does it cost?

Clearline is free, with one small banner ad. Remove Ads is $9.99 once, shared with your family, and it also unlocks the other app icons.

When can I get it?

Clearline is finished and in testing, and comes to the App Store next. Write to [email protected] and we'll tell you the day it's out.

Where the numbers come from

  1. The formula, and the average body-water ratios (0.68 for men, 0.55 for women) when height or age aren’t set. Widmark EMP. Die theoretischen Grundlagen und die praktische Verwendbarkeit der gerichtlich-medizinischen Alkoholbestimmung. 1932.
  2. How much water your body holds, from your sex, age, height and weight. Watson PE, Watson ID, Batt RD. Total body water volumes for adult males and females estimated from simple anthropometric measurements. Am J Clin Nutr. 1980.
  3. Turning body water into the formula’s ratio. Watson PE, Watson ID, Batt RD. Prediction of blood alcohol concentrations in human subjects. Updating the Widmark equation. J Stud Alcohol. 1981.
  4. How fast the body clears alcohol: about 0.015% an hour, from 0.010% to 0.020%. Jones AW. Evidence-based survey of the elimination rates of ethanol from blood with applications in forensic casework. Forensic Sci Int. 2010.
  5. How long a drink takes to reach the blood: about 36 minutes for spirits, 54 for wine and 62 for beer. Mitchell MC Jr, Teigen EL, Ramchandani VA. Absorption and peak blood alcohol concentration after drinking beer, wine, or spirits. Alcohol Clin Exp Res. 2014.
